Your Turn: Poetry Day
I would like to praise the idea of a National Poetry Day. Poetry is about taking time to observe life and play with words to create an image or convey something meaningful. Not only that but the rhythm, rhyme and content can just bring pleasure.
National Poetry Day encourages people to read and write poems. It is a time for the young and old alike to spend some poetry time. I believe that poems should be accessible. They should be written by the people, for the people and I don’t subscribe to those who try to make poetry so clever that it is difficult to understand.
In my area there are all sorts of events from readings to open mic sessions and for children there are competitions. Poetry has such a variety of forms children always find something to enjoy. My local library is running a free workshop for adults by a published poet followed by a reading of her work. I’ll be there!
Last year the theme was, “dreams” and the writers in a class I go to, read their poems on the local radio. This year the theme is work. The web site for more details, posters and free lesson plans is http://www.nationalpoetryday.co.uk/
One of the ideas is to e-mail a poem to your work colleagues on the day. The site has some you could send or you could write your own. So let’s extend this to other countries. Here’s my effort:
Work
The privilege of work
gives dignity to me.
It helps to pay my bills;
forms my identity.
Work gives me a reason
to rise and face the day
and meet lots of people;
hear what they have to say.
A variety of skills
are learned through my training .
The job gives challenges
which are brain sustaining.
Although there are some days
with tasks I could avoid,
support from my colleagues
make my day enjoyed.
There have been occasions
when I’ve been out of work
so now I love my job.
Contentment is my perk!
Your Turn: Why not join in and contribute a poem about “work” as a comment to this blog. I’m sure we would all love to read them.

I was going to leave a really cute comment all in rhyme
But, as it turns out, I’m not feeling inspired this morning.
And blank verse has always been more my style anyway.
Still, I love the idea of asking everyone to contribute a verse or two about work.
