Sound Advice: Voice Notes

sound-advice-voice-notes

This week’s Sound Advice comes with no pun intended, and comes from a conversation Deb, my husband, her younger daughter and I had at dinner last night. Specifically, it has to do with the use of voice notes.

Most of us have things we need to remember, items to add to our to-do lists or Outlook calendars, for example, but they occur to us when we’re not near a computer, or don’t have access to pen and paper. This is when we can all turn to voice notes.

Many cell phones, especially those of the Blackberry/Blackjack/iPhone/Treo ilk, and other “smart” phones, have a specific application just for recording voice notes. Some MP3 players (Creative Zen products, for example) also have them, but if they don’t you can always call your own voicemail and leave yourself a message.

When I worked in an office that wasn’t in my house, I used to leave messages on my work voicemail all the time. Not only was it faster than emailing myself, especially if something triggered a reminder when I was in the bathroom, or in the middle of the night, but the more senses you engage when attempting to remember something, the more likely you are to remember it. The act of speaking, which also caused me to hear my own voice both that the time, and the next morning when I played my messages, helped me remember to do whatever it was I’d left the message about.

Do you have tips or tricks that help you through the day? We’d love to use them for Sound Advice. Just leave a comment on the blog!
