Sound Advice: Key Notes
I don’t think there’s a person anywhere who hasn’t misplaced her keys at some point. Here are some suggestions for always knowing where your keys are, and preventing unplanned lockouts:
- Pick on location near the door, and leave your keys there every time you come home. If you generally enter your home through the garage or mudroom, put the hook or bowl near that door.
- Consider a key leash, so that your keys are always attached to your purse. For office keys, consider one of those bungee bracelets, and keep your keys attached to your wrist.
- For kids who let themselves in after school, or some home to an empty house, consider putting their key on a lanyard or chain, and having them wear it “dog tag” style.
- Only carry the keys you actually need on a daily basis. Leave the rest at home or in the office.
- Leave an extra key with a trusted neighbor for emergency lockout situations.
- Never, ever, stash your keys in a coat or pants pocket. Not only can they easily fall out, they’re too easy to forget in such locations.
