Living Green - Earth Day 2008
Earth Day is just around the corner and everywhere you go advertisers invite, order, suggest that you “go green.” I’m sick of it! When did being kind to the earth become a trend?
I can’t recall ever living another way. At the ripe age of 12 in the early 80’s, way before curbside recycling, I insisted that my parents seperate out the glass bottles and soda cans. The thought of throwing away something that could be used again seemed insane - even if it meant having to drive our trash into town to a recycling facility. From April to September I’ve always used a clothesline to dry my clothes - why would I waste the dryer when the sun is blazing in the yard? I live in 1,000 square foot house, drive a fuel efficient Toyota and guess what - I was living in a a similar sized home and my Mom drove a similar car when I was in high school.
Being green isn’t about buying wind credits in exchange for purchasing an SUV. It isn’t about attending benefit concerts, and then going home to sleep in a 5,000 square foot air-conditioned home. It’s about not speeding through life, but taking the time to shut the water when brushing your teeth, to not take a bag when you’re shopping if you don’t really need one. It’s about thinking of the earth…always…not just when the advertisers remind you to.

*Applaud* I couldn’t agree with you more! It’s far too easy for folks to feel like they have made some sort of gesture/input to help, but as soon as you ask them to actually change something in their life - even the smallest thing, it seems like another story.
We should be thinking about our daily impact and trying to lessen the load.
