Live Alone and Like It The Classic Guide for the Single Woman

Those are not the words at the end of a Sex and the City episode, but a quote from the book Live Alone and Like It by Marjorie Hillis. This lovely little pink book, sized just right for dropping into any designer clutch, gives not advice as well as case studies for all aspects of living alone. It’s smart, chic, funny and gives the kind of advice you would expect to find in a Carrie Bradshaw column. You will likely be surprised to know that the book was written in 1936 by Marjorie Hillis who was a Vogue Editor and an example of the growing number of women who lived alone by choice.
Though we often long for romance in our lives, which Hillis acknowledges in Chapters such as “When a Lady Needs a Friend”, many women are choosing to have a career and live alone by choice, not by chance. Hillis provides practical advice on subjects such as dressing fashionably, handling your finances smartly, and simply enjoying life. She advocates all kinds of ideals you probably thought were modern on subjects like sex, friendships, and liquor. It’s a fabulous little read and would make a great gift for a recent college grad, recently divorced or widowed girlfriend, or any woman that wants a bit of a road map to navigating the life of a single woman out in the world.

I think it is hard to stay upbeat all of the time when you’re single. I hate certain “holidays”: New Years (that kiss at midnight is depressing), Valentine’s Day (why don’t people just share Valentine’s Day cards like we did when were kids…if you care, say so), even the bigger get-togethers. “Oh, you can bring a “friend.”" Hmmm….
I’m in my 40s, single, never been married. My life couldn’t be fuller and more gratifying. But there are those moments….

I’ve been living alone for almost 5 years now after a really long and tumultuous relationship. I love it most of the time, but there are certain times when I just wish there were someone to come home to at night. This book sounds like it may help me during the lonely moments.

It’s kind of funny that I happened upon this blog since I have a dear friend who is ending a relationship, not by her choice, and moving to her own apartment.
I know how great the independence is… I’m glad I got my year or so of it to really get the right man for me.

Living alone is not as bad as one might think, but it takes skill to do it with success. I have often admired people who do it well. Not many of us would choose to live alone. But if we do find ourselves in that situation, we all want to do it well.

Wow, this is such a relevant topic for me!
I started having kids too young and now my youngest is moving out! I am now an empty nester without much of a life for myself and my youngest is going into the same kind of situation that I did when I was young. I’m so sad. I would love for her and I to both read this book.
My eldest actually moved to another city and went to school and became a jewellry designer…now she did it the right way!

I saw an article in my newspaper and it sounded wonderful! People have got to stop thinking they can’t live a full life without a partner or spouse. To me that is a new type of mental illness brought on by our society. You don’t stop living just because your single!!!! Great book ideal.

I’d really love to read this book. I’ve never lived alone. I lived at home while attending a local college, where I met my husband to be, then I married at the foolish age of 20. Three years later I had my first child, and had my second at 28. I missed so much. Only had 2 dates before dating my husband for an embarrassingly short time before marrying and regret that I didn’t live a life of my own.
If only I could do it all again, I don’t think that I would get married or have children.
Listen ladies…it’s not all it’s cracked up to be….all you do with your life is sacrifice for other people, and give pieces of yourself away and get nothing in return.

Divorced after 23 years of marriage when my significant other decided the grass was much greener and definitely younger on the other side of the fence. Needless to say I have no desire to marry again and still find myself trying to adjust to living the single life. And what exactly does a woman do when the the kids are all grown up and have lives of their own and there is no man in her life? These are the questions among others I find myself asking. Does this book have the answers…don’t know but I would like to find out.

One thing I have learned is that you don’t need a man around the house 24/7. My yard man does “honey do” things like moving heavy things, repairing a fence, repairing/replacing things, putting up Christmas lights, etc. He is much cheaper and less stress than a husband, I don’t have to feed him or do his laundry, and he doesn’t give me “attitude” when there is work to be done.

I would love to give this to my best friend. She ended a 39 year
marriage of being controlled and treated like a prisoner. Then she
did a really stupid thing a year latter married another control
freak and has left him but not till he got her to marry him.
So I think she would enjoy this book as she is now living in
a townhouse and enjoying her freedom and hopefully has learned
her lesson.
