Inspiring Women: Seven Questions with Entrepreneur Sandra McCormick
Give us your “Elevator” Speech as to WHO you are and WHAT it is that you do for a “living”. And how should we “know” you?
Hi. My name is Sandra McCormick. I design and handcraft eco-friendly lunch and sandwich bags. My shop, Sandra Kay Creations, is part of the Etsy community.
Tells about your path to getting to where you are with your business today.
I was a Registered Nurse for 23 years. But nursing can wear on one’s soul. I felt the need to step aside.
Years ago out of a love of creating, I taught myself to crochet and sew. One of the things I sewed were original lunch bags. They were such a hit, I started selling them online.
Several boutiques contacted me for wholesale orders and, living in a summer tourist area, my bags are carried in a local gift shop.
Most exciting of all, one of my lunch bag patters will be included in a craft book that will be released in July 2010.
What is your personal “motto” or “mission statement”?
After working in critical care for years, I’ve learned that life is fragile and sometimes it is short. I hate to sound cliche but my motto might be “Seize the Day”! Do something today! You can’t wait for tomorrow because, for some of us, tomorrow might be more complicated than we expect or it might not come at all.
Besides your business, what are you passionate about?
My family. My husband. My three children.
I love being at the beach, even in winter. I dream all day long about surfing. I love walking through the woods on nature trails. I enjoy my garden.
What advice would you give to other women wanting to follow your career path?
Don’t wait, do it! If you can dream it, you can can do it.
Ignore your negative thoughts and steer clear of negative people.
Just roll up your sleeves, put your head down, and work hard. The payoff is so sweet.
Pimp yourself! Where can we find you on the web, in bookstores, at the movies, on TV, etc?
You can find me at www.SandraKay.etsy.com.
I’m also on Twitter, Flickr, and Facebook. If you’re interested in following me on any of those sites, just drop me a message from my Etsy store. I’d love to “friend” you.
What question should we have asked, that we didn’t? Now is YOUR opportunity to tell us what we missed!
They are all handcrafted from original designs. Every piece of fabric was cut by me. Every stitch ran through my fingers. Every item is given more care than you can imagine. If I find the slightest mistake, even if it’s just one inside stitch, I won’t list it in my shop.
I make everything as if I were making it for my best friend.
Being hand-crafted isn’t always enough. My bags are hand-crafted with care, with love, and with appreciation.
(Note from Deb: I purchased one of Sandra’s lunch bags this past year for two reasons: I wanted to be “greener” in my living - and it was WAY cute. It’s on my list of gifts to give this Christmas)

Great interview. I’m familiar with Etsy and have a shop there myself (bluejules2008). It’s a wonderful community.
